Gavran + Thistle Sifter

Rotterdam band Gavran and Utrecht-based Thistle Sifter join forces at Rotown for a double bill moving through doom, post-rock, ambient, sludge and shoegaze.

Gavran builds dense, emotional walls of sound that shift between heavy riffs and more atmospheric passages. The Rotterdam band moves across several genres without settling into one, creating music that can feel crushing one moment and spacious the next. The name Gavran means ‘raven’ in Croatian.

Thistle Sifter is the cinematic post-rock project of English musician Pete Barnes, who is based in Utrecht. Barnes started the project following a serious cycling accident in 2020, using music as an outlet during his long recovery. Serene post-rock, spacious synthesisers, evolving soundscapes and touches of lo-fi folk give the project a more ethereal counterpart to Gavran’s heavier sound.

Thistle Sifter previously performed the aftershow for Sigur Rós at AFAS Live, while its live incarnation expands Barnes’ compositions into a full-band setting.
