Miguel Zenón

Miguel Zenón is more than just a masterful alto saxophonist; he is a pioneering voice in Latin jazz. His playing is both powerful and virtuosic, filled with rich tones and passionate improvisations. With his signature sound, he breathes new life into traditional Caribbean rhythms.

As a composer, Zenón delves deep into the musical heritage of his native Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican community in New York. His 2021 album El Arte Del Bolero pays homage to the romantic and danceable bolero style of the 1950s. In Música de las Américas (2022), he explores the history, culture, and influence of the indigenous peoples of North, Central, and South America, examining the connections between their musical traditions and how they have blended with African and European influences.

Known for his innovative approach to Puerto Rican musical culture, Zenón seamlessly bridges genres and styles, from jazz interpretations of folk singer Ismael Rivera to nearly classical chamber music. He has worked with jazz legends such as Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Mark Turner, and Leo Lovano. His debut album was released on Marsalis' label, a platform he remained part of for years before joining the prestigious SFJAZZ Collective.
