Bach and Mozart – Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the Grote Zaal at de Doelen with an evening of Bach and Mozart that aims to bring light into the darkest weeks of the year. At the heart of the programme is Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, the “Haffner”, a work that moves from ceremonial brightness to quick, energetic finales. Around it, the orchestra places music by Johann Sebastian Bach, opening with the Sinfonia from Cantata No. 174 and continuing with the Third Orchestral Suite and the Concerto for oboe d’amore in A, featuring principal oboist Karel Schoofs as soloist. 

On the podium is Dutch conductor Jan Willem de Vriend, a regular guest with the orchestra and a specialist in eighteenth-century repertoire. In Rotterdam he leads the players through a sequence of baroque and classical pieces that connect the courtly sound world of Bach with Mozart’s clear, theatrical writing, all heard in the acoustic of de Doelen’s main hall on Schouwburgplein.
