Barbican Quartet

The Barbican Quartet, an award-winning young string quartet, performs an evening of chamber music in the Jurriaanse Zaal at de Doelen in Rotterdam. Regular guests on international stages, the ensemble has been praised for intimate yet powerful interpretations and tightly woven ensemble playing that foregrounds detail and balance within the group. In Rotterdam they appear in the long-running Kamermuziekvereeniging series, which brings leading quartets and soloists to the city centre. 

The programme moves from the classical clarity of Haydn to the colour and rhythmic drive of Ravel. Along the way, Szymanowski’s Second String Quartet and Rebecca Clarke’s Poem for string quartet introduce early twentieth-century sonorities and a more modern harmonic language. The result is a journey through two centuries of string quartet writing, heard up close in one of de Doelen’s more intimate halls. Before the main concert, students from Codarts Rotterdam provide a short introductory performance, making it a full evening of chamber music on Schouwburgplein.
