Indie folk storyteller brings intimate show to Lab Grounds

American singer-songwriter Simon Joyner returns to Rotterdam with his deeply personal album Coyote Butterfly (2024). Known as one of the pioneers of the Omaha music scene, Joyner has spent more than two decades blending indie folk with elements of Americana, country and lo-fi poetry.

Championed by John Peel and admired by artists like Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Kevin Morby and Gillian Welch, Joyner’s songwriting is steeped in emotion. His new album reflects on the loss of his son through imagined dialogues and lyrical confessions — a moving collection of fragile, heartfelt songs that find beauty in sorrow.

Lab Grounds is Podium Grounds’ intimate second stage in the former HBS school building on ’s-Gravendijkwal in Rotterdam’s Oude Westen, a flexible room where the Grounds team programmes adventurous gigs, club nights, workshops and community events; it complements the main Grounds hall on Pieter de Hoochweg and doubles as a creative third space and café that supports emerging artists and neighbourhood projects.
