Alisa Weilerstein — Fragments 1: Wonder

The acclaimed American cellist Alisa Weilerstein brings her ambitious Fragments project to Rotterdam, weaving together the timeless cello suites of Bach with new works by 27 contemporary composers. Each performance blends music with lighting, staging and costume design, creating a strikingly modern concert experience while paying homage to Bach’s enduring legacy.

The opening chapter, Wonder, marks its European premiere at de Doelen. Across 18 short movements, Weilerstein interlaces Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G major with works by Allison Loggins-Hull, Gili Schwarzman, Joan Tower, Reinaldo Moya and Chen Yi. The result is a performance that transforms Bach’s familiar notes through the lens of modern voices, reimagining classical tradition for the present day.

Weilerstein, recognised as one of the most expressive and versatile cellists of her generation, is celebrated for her deep musicality and commanding stage presence. With Fragments, she pushes the boundaries of concert form, fusing old and new into a multisensory journey.
