Shai Maestro – Solo: Miniatures & Tales

Shai Maestro (1987) is widely regarded as one of the most gifted and influential pianists of his generation. Since the debut of his own trio in 2011, he has captivated audiences across the globe with a flowing, harmonious, and meditative sound. Now, after four years, he returns to LantarenVenster in Rotterdam with music from his forthcoming solo album, Miniatures & Tales, due for release in May 2025 via Naive Records.

With this album, a long-held dream is realised. According to Maestro, it marks not only a personal milestone but the beginning of a new chapter of solo recordings. The album explores contrasting musical landscapes: the Miniatures are built on delicate, precise phrasing and a sense of serenity and focus, while the Tales embrace raw, introspective expression, patiently unfolding with nuance and depth.

Maestro began classical piano lessons at the age of five. At eighteen, after discovering Oscar Peterson, he fell in love with jazz. His musical language is deeply rooted in the traditions of his native Israel and infused with elements of Eastern music. Until 2011, he was a core member of bassist Avishai Cohen’s band. His previous albums, including The Dream Thief (2018) and Human (2021), released on ECM Records, reflect his distinctive, atmospheric voice and expressive style.
