The West Coast Big Band featuring Deborah J. Carter

Start your Sunday with swinging big band jazz at de Doelen in Rotterdam on 8 November 2026. The West Coast Big Band joins American jazz vocalist Deborah J. Carter for a lively morning concert featuring timeless classics, familiar melodies and a musical journey through the golden age of jazz.

The programme celebrates the rich history of big band music, from the unmistakable sounds of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey to the vocal jazz traditions of Ella Fitzgerald. Along the way, the musicians also explore soul and more contemporary interpretations, creating a varied concert that appeals to both dedicated jazz enthusiasts and casual listeners.

Big band tradition meets contemporary jazz

The West Coast Big Band is an award-winning Dutch jazz ensemble known for its energetic performances and versatile repertoire. The orchestra has won several prizes, including multiple victories at the International Big Band Competition, and has performed at major Dutch jazz venues alongside internationally recognised soloists.

Joining the orchestra is Deborah J. Carter, an American-born jazz singer who grew up in Hawaii and Japan. Known for her expressive vocals, warm stage presence and adventurous interpretations, Carter moves comfortably between traditional jazz, modern arrangements and crossover styles.

Together, the musicians transform de Doelen's Grote Zaal into a swinging Sunday morning jazz club, with plenty of familiar songs and opportunities to discover new musical favourites.
