Rim Akandoh Jnr. & Amamere

Description

Ghanaian drummer and composer Rim Akandoh Jnr. brings Amamere back to Grounds with an irresistible blend of 1970s guitar highlife and vintage Afro-funk.

Formed in Cape Coast in 2022, the group draws on Ghana’s rich highlife tradition while giving it a contemporary, dancefloor-ready energy. Akandoh is joined by experienced Ghanaian musicians, creating a sound driven by guitars, horns, complex percussion and the pulsing rhythms at the heart of classic highlife.

Debut album Man Shall Be Free combines new interpretations of music by Akandoh’s father, the ‘Mighty’ Rim Akandoh and his Prince Sparrows Band, with pieces inspired by the Osoode medley tradition of Western Ghana and the group’s own compositions. Beneath the grooves, the songs also draw on proverbial storytelling and address everyday life, love and politics.

After their first European tour in 2026, including an earlier appearance at Grounds, Rim Akandoh Jnr. & Amamere return to Rotterdam ahead of a second album planned for March 2027.
