Description
Irish soul-funk artist Curtis Millen and Rotterdam singer-songwriter Kevin Bokomo perform in the HBS Garden during a free edition of the Playgrounds Sessions. The outdoor series pairs live music with food and drinks in the garden at Lab Grounds.
Curtis Millen combines the emotional weight of classic soul with modern funk, house and disco. Raised in West Belfast in the aftermath of conflict, he channels resilience and personal experience into music influenced by Motown, jazz, 1990s grunge and hiphop. His live performances are energetic, soulful and made to move a crowd.
Kevin Bokomo was born and raised in Congo and developed his musical background through soul and African gospel. Now based in Rotterdam, he brings together soul, R&B and funk, drawing vocal inspiration from artists including Al Green, D’Angelo and Lokua Kanza. Smooth vocals sit at the heart of his sound.
The garden opens an hour before the performances begin, leaving time to find a spot and settle in for an evening of live soul and funk.

Lab Grounds is Podium Grounds’ intimate second stage in the former HBS school building on ’s-Gravendijkwal in Rotterdam’s Oude Westen, a flexible room where the Grounds team programmes adventurous gigs, club nights, workshops and community events; it complements the main Grounds hall on Pieter de Hoochweg and doubles as a creative third space and café that supports emerging artists and neighbourhood projects.
