ROTTERDAM, 4 May 2022 - Starting Thursday 5 May, festival organization Rotterdamse Dakendagen will be selling tickets for the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk. With stairs and a spectacular air bridge 29.5 metres high, the roofs of the Bijenkorf and WTC Rotterdam will be connected and made accessible.
Once at the top, the visitor will experience a future image of the city. In it, the 'roof landscape' will be fully utilized for greenery, art, housing, recreation, food production, the generation of energy and more. All developments on the Coolsingel can be followed live via a livestream from the Schielandtoren.
The walking route opens on 26 May, Ascension Day, and can be visited until 24 June. Rotterdam Rooftop Walk is a one-off project in addition to the annual Dakendagen weekend, which takes place from 3 to 5 June. On that weekend, including the Rooftop Walk, 35 roofs in the city can be visited. A visit to the Rooftop Walk costs €3.50 for adults, while children go for free. Ticket sales for both events start on 5 May 2012 at rotterdamsedakendagen.nl and rooftopwalk.nl.
Rotterdam Rooftop Walk from 26 May to 24 June 2022
The design of the route is a collaboration between architects MVRDV and Rotterdam Rooftop Days, executed in scaffolding material by Dutch Scaffolding. The walk starts with a set of stairs on Beursplein to the monumental roof of WTC Rotterdam. The crossing of the Coolsingel takes place via a 60-metre-long air bridge. Swinging across the roof of the Bijenkorf, the route then ends on the roof of the Q-Park next to the department store. After that, the public descends into the Aert van Nesstraat, via a scaffolding staircase along the facade of the building. During the route, visitors will experience how the space on flat city roofs can be better utilized. For example, there is a tiny house — including inhabitants — on the roof, artists depict a sustainable future for city dwellers, and new methods are used to generate energy, use rainwater and make roofs greener. The Rotterdam Rooftop Walk is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 and can only be visited upon reservation of a time slot.

The annual Rotterdam Rooftop Days festival will be held from 3 to 5 June, with Luchtpark Hofbogen as the festival heart. You can visit this central roof for free for food, drinks, live music and a festival atmosphere with a view. You can visit the roof by yourself by booking one of the roof routes on 4 and 5 June: a walk or bike ride from roof to roof, with a small-scale programme at the locations. Visitors can also be accompanied by a guide during one of 11 different roof tours. Theatre and musical acts complete the programme. On Friday, 3 June, the official opening of the festival and the International Rooftop Knowledge Day will take place. Guests from home and abroad will come to Rotterdam or meet online for this English-language knowledge day about the potential of flat roofs. This collaboration with Architectuur Instituut Rotterdam (AIR) takes place on the temporary, bright pink roof structure Het Podium: an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut and designed by MVRDV.
