SML brings live jazz, electronics and hypnotic groove to BIRD

SML comes to BIRD on Sunday 15 November for a seated concert full of live jazz, electronic effects and digital sampling. The five-piece band from Los Angeles takes jazz into a looser, more physical space, where groove matters more than flashy solos.

The line-up brings together bassist Anna Butterss, keyboardist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann. Together, they create music that moves through repetition, texture and rhythm, pulling you further into the sound as it unfolds.

Pitchfork described their approach as a new chapter in jazz. After their debut album Small Medium Large, SML played at leading festivals around the world. In the summer of 2026, the band is also set to appear at North Sea Jazz. Their latest release, How You Been, sounds sharper and bolder, with a strong live energy running through it.

For listeners who like their jazz exploratory, groovy and slightly off-centre, this one should be firmly on the radar. A bit nerdy, yes. But in the very best way. 🎷
