Immanuel Wilkins brings modern jazz fire to LantarenVenster

Alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins comes to LantarenVenster on Saturday 7 November for a seated concert with his quartet. Wilkins has quickly become one of the most talked-about names in international jazz, known for an expressive sound that moves with depth, force and imagination.

His debut album Omega was released on Blue Note in 2020 and immediately marked him as a major new voice. Since then, Wilkins has continued to gather praise for his playing, his compositions and his place near the top of yearly jazz lists from leading magazines such as DownBeat.

Wilkins does not sit neatly inside one box. His music draws from jazz, visual art and film, giving his work a broad, cinematic feeling without losing the raw power of live improvisation. On Blues Blood, he worked with several vocalists, including Cécile McLorin Salvant and Chris Dave. The album was produced by Meshell Ndegeocello.

His latest major release is a three-hour live recording from New York’s legendary Village Vanguard. It captures Wilkins and his quartet in full form, with long, searching solos and a band sound that keeps moving, building and opening up.

For the Rotterdam concert, Wilkins is joined by Micah Thomas on piano, Ryoma Takenaga on double bass and Kweku Sumbry on drums. Expect a night of bold modern jazz, rich improvisation and a quartet that knows exactly how to push a room into focus.
