Tyn Wybenga’s Brainteaser Orchestra

Composer and bandleader Tyn Wybenga brings his Brainteaser Orchestra to Rotterdam with a sound that moves freely between jazz, electronica, hip-hop and contemporary composition. The listing frames his music as a meeting point between worlds, imagining something like Stravinsky, Frank Zappa and J Dilla in the same room, which already tells you this is not going to be a straightforward jazz night.

The Brainteaser Orchestra, formerly known as AM.OK, is built around a method that feels as adventurous as the music itself. Live improvisations by band members and guest soloists are recorded, cut into hundreds of samples, and then restructured into entirely new pieces. In that sense, Wybenga treats the orchestra almost like a single instrument, shaping dense, surprising soundscapes with an approach that recalls the exploratory spirit of Bitches Brew.

That experimental edge has already brought serious recognition. Their debut album Brainteaser won the German Jazz Prize in 2022 for Best International Debut Album. Now the focus shifts to new work, Tonepool Paradox, described here as a mix of live electronics, improvisation, firm grooves, sweeping ballads, wild solos and hypnotic sonic textures, all played by a line-up drawn from the top tier of the Dutch jazz scene.
