New album tour lands at LantarenVenster
After five years away, California trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire returns to Rotterdam with a quartet and a fresh chapter of music. Expect a set that keeps stretching the edges of modern jazz, with colours borrowed from hip-hop, pop, spoken word and even classical music, all woven into something distinctly his.
Akinmusire is a Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition winner, studied with legends like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, and has collaborated with artists including Esperanza Spalding, Jason Moran and Snarky Puppy. You might also recognise his playing from Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. Critics have long pointed to him as one of the strongest voices in contemporary jazz, and this concert is a great chance to hear why.
