Het Muziek & Johannes Offerhaus – Shelter

In Shelter at the Jurriaanse Zaal in de Doelen, ensemble Het Muziek joins visual artist Johannes Offerhaus for a performance that treats the concert hall as a temporary refuge in the centre of Rotterdam. Composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe explore the basic human need for a place to breathe, hide, disappear or begin again, using a musical language that shifts from intimate, almost whispered textures to hard-edged, pulsing passages that feel physical in the room. 

Offerhaus, curated by Studio Boris Acket, surrounds the musicians with a kinetic textile installation that grows, contracts and appears to breathe along with the score. The moving structure turns the hall into a shifting architectural space, sometimes enclosing the audience and sometimes opening out again. As sound, light and fabric interact, Shelter becomes less a traditional concert and more an immersive experience in which contemporary music, design and performance art are closely interwoven on Schouwburgplein.
