Stadsorganist Adriaan Hoek – Paul Klee dreams Bach

Rotterdam city organist Adriaan Hoek presents a concert in the Grote Zaal of de Doelen that links the intricate counterpoint of Johann Sebastian Bach with the colourful, abstract world of painter Paul Klee. At the centre of the programme is Bach’s Musikalisches Opfer, a work built on canons, fugues and musical riddles that show the composer at his most inventive. While Hoek plays the Flentrop organ in the heart of Rotterdam, an AI-driven visual design brings Klee’s rhythmic lines and playful geometry to life on screen, creating a dialogue between sound and image. 

Hoek is known in Rotterdam and abroad for his broad repertoire, spanning medieval to contemporary works, and for his role as regular organist on the de Doelen instrument. In this evening concert he sets Bach’s timeless structures against the modern lens of digital visuals and twentieth-century art, inviting the audience to listen with both ears and eyes as the Grote Zaal becomes a kind of living canvas.
