Los Wembler’s de Iquitos

Tropical, colourful and steeped in mystery, the legendary Los Wembler’s de Iquitos bring their pioneering sound of cumbia amazónica to Grounds. Emerging from the Peruvian Amazon in the late 1960s, the band fused indigenous melodies and Afro-Latin rhythms with psychedelic rock and surf-inspired guitars, creating a style that became known as chicha. Their hits, including “Sonido Amazonico” and “Danza del Petrolero,” cemented their place as icons of Latin alternative music.

Formed by shoemaker Solomon Sanchez and his five sons, Los Wembler’s reshaped traditional rhythms into a new, electrified form that went on to influence generations. Today, they are celebrated as elder statesmen of the worldwide cumbia revival, continuing to inspire audiences across the Americas and Europe with their infectious, party-starting sound.
