SONICO Quintet: 100 years of Rovira

Brussels-based tango ensemble SONICO comes to LantarenVenster with a tribute to Argentine composer Eduardo Rovira, a pioneering figure in tango nuevo who is sometimes described as the 'other Astor Piazzolla'.

Rovira helped develop a new musical language for Argentine tango during the 1950s, bringing the genre into conversation with classical composition and more experimental ideas. Although his contemporary Astor Piazzolla became internationally famous, Rovira's work remained comparatively little known outside Argentina.

SONICO has made rediscovering that music a central part of its identity. The five-piece ensemble brings together bandoneon, violin, guitar, double bass and piano, exploring the intricate arrangements and unexpected harmonies that made Rovira's compositions so distinctive. The musicians have performed at jazz, tango, classical and world music festivals across Europe and Latin America.

The group introduced its debut album Eduardo Rovira: La Otra Vanguardia at Buenos Aires' Tango Festival in 2018. Now, with 100 Years of Rovira, SONICO makes its LantarenVenster debut, offering Rotterdam audiences an opportunity to discover a less familiar chapter of Argentine tango history.
