Film concert: Metropolis with Wishful Singing

Fritz Lang’s science-fiction masterpiece Metropolis returns to the big screen with a newly composed live soundtrack performed by vocal ensemble Wishful Singing and guest musicians.

Released in 1927, Metropolis imagined a futuristic city divided between wealthy residents living above ground and workers operating enormous machines below. Nearly a century later, its themes of inequality, technology, artificial intelligence and the relationship between humans and machines feel remarkably contemporary.

Composer Steven Kamperman has created a new score that combines the voices of Wishful Singing with bass clarinet, percussion, electric guitar, theremin, synthesisers and electronics. Haunting vocals and mechanical rhythms give Lang’s black-and-white imagery a new musical perspective while leaving the original film at the centre of the experience.
