Philipp Rüttgers Trio: Re: Satie – Picturing the Invisible

Pianist and composer Philipp Rüttgers brings the strange, melancholic world of Erik Satie into contemporary jazz with his trio.

For new album Re: Satie, Picturing the Invisible, Rüttgers immersed himself in Satie’s music, taking fragments and motifs from across the French composer’s work and reshaping them into something new. Satie’s restraint, humour and fascination with space remain recognisable, but the music is opened up through improvisation and the language of a modern jazz trio.

Together with drummer Sun-Mi Hong and double bassist Omer Govreen, Rüttgers explores what can happen between the notes, moving through quiet tension, hidden harmonies and spontaneous interplay. Rather than simply interpreting Satie, the trio uses his ideas as the starting point for music that can be delicate one moment and unexpectedly expressive the next.
