Katia & Marielle Labèque

Piano duo Katia and Marielle Labèque comes to de Doelen with a programme that moves freely between classical repertoire, contemporary music and unexpected arrangements.

The French sisters have performed together for more than 50 years and are known for programmes that reach beyond the traditional piano-duo repertoire. In Rotterdam, they combine music by composers including Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Grażyna Bacewicz with works by Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, Margaret Bonds, Nina Simone, Leonard Bernstein and Bryce Dessner.

Part of the programme is performed four hands on one piano, while other works use two pianos. Highlights include Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Nina Simone’s Wild Is the Wind and music from Bernstein’s West Side Story. The evening closes the distance between classical music, jazz, popular song and contemporary composition.
