Description
Het Muziek marks the 50th anniversary of Louis Andriessen’s Hoketus with a programme connecting one of Dutch contemporary music’s landmark works to a new composition by Michael Gordon.
When Hoketus premiered in the 1970s, its uncompromising rhythms and unusual double-ensemble formation helped define the sound of the Hague School. The work influenced composers well beyond the Netherlands and became an important part of Andriessen’s musical legacy.
For this anniversary programme, Michael Gordon, co-founder of Bang on a Can, has written a new companion piece that enters into dialogue with Hoketus. Rather than creating a conventional tribute, Gordon continues its confrontational energy through a contemporary musical response.
