Description
Hailing from North Carolina, Jake Xerxes Fussell is a masterful storyteller of folk music. Often mentioned alongside guitar virtuosos like William Tyler and Ryley Walker, Fussell breathes new life into forgotten folk songs, reviving them with warmth and reverence. His deeply expressive voice creates a bridge between past and present, weaving narratives that feel timeless.
A collector of melodies and traditions, Fussell’s work carries a rich historical weight, yet his interpretations are strikingly fresh. His evocative songwriting has earned admiration from figures like Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, and Bill Callahan, who appreciate his unique ability to make old songs feel newly discovered.
His latest album, When I’m Called (released on the esteemed Fat Possum label in June 2024), is a meditation on impermanence and life’s unpredictable turns. Featuring collaborations with Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station), Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver, Califone), and producer Blake Mills, the album showcases a diverse sonic palette. Fussell remains a true folk singer—not just a performer, but an archivist of stories, always searching for the threads that connect us across time and tradition.
