Ari Hoenig Trio

Ari Hoenig, the Philadelphia-born jazz drummer, composer, and educator, is renowned for his innovative exploration of the melodic possibilities of the drum set. Known for his intense and unconventional approach, Hoenig elevates drumming from mere rhythm to a core component of musical expression. His technique allows him to create complex harmonies and melodies, seamlessly blending with his fellow musicians in captivating performances.

What sets Hoenig apart is his ability to use pitch modulation, achieved through drumsticks, hands, and even elbows, to transform the drum set into a melodic instrument. This extraordinary skill enables him to craft intricate, chromatic structures as fluidly as any other instrumentalist.

Coming from a family of classically trained musicians, Hoenig was exposed to music from an early age. His father was a choral conductor, and his mother a violinist, both influencing his forays into classical and folk music. Alongside the drums, Hoenig mastered the piano and violin, which further shaped his approach to composition and improvisation. Over the years, he has collaborated with jazz greats such as Joshua Redman, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, and Richard Bona.

To date, Hoenig has released 15 albums, including his latest, Tea for Three, recorded with pianist Gadi Lehavi and bassist Ben Tiberio. Reflecting on the trio’s dynamic synergy, Hoenig says, “This group continues to grow and offers new musical paths every time we play together.”
