Description
In a programme that meditates on longing and liberation, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra presents Fauré’s Requiem alongside Brahms’ radiant Third Symphony. With its tender, intimate character, Fauré’s beloved Requiem offers a gentle farewell — a vision of paradise conveyed through serene melodies and heavenly choral writing. At the heart lies the radiant “Libera me,” a moving plea for peace and redemption.
Opening the evening is Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, a work infused with the composer’s yearning for freedom — his personal motto “Frei aber froh” (“Free but happy”) guiding the emotional arc of this masterpiece. Together, these two works trace a spiritual journey toward stillness and sublime beauty.
Conductor Lahav Shani leads a distinguished cast, including soprano Christiane Karg, baritone Thomas Oliemans, and the Netherlands Chamber Choir.
