Joey Calderazzo Trio to perform at LantarenVenster

A solo by Joey Calderazzo evokes the artistry of generations of great jazz pianists, all refracted through his unique, energetic style and effortless finesse.

Calderazzo is best known as the pianist for the Branford Marsalis Quartet. Having started classical piano lessons at the age of eight, he eventually discovered jazz. By his twenties, he had solidified his reputation as the dynamic and explosive pianist of the Michael Brecker Band.

Time and again, Calderazzo has captivated audiences, holding his own even against the electrifying solos of guitarists like Mike Stern and Brecker himself. Following the death of Kenny Kirkland, Calderazzo joined Branford Marsalis’ quartet, where he became a key contributor. He also played with Marsalis’ electric band, Buckshot LeFonque, while working tirelessly on his own solo projects.

Alongside Branford Marsalis, Calderazzo has recently collaborated on the acoustic double album Songs of Mirth and Melancholy. He also performed with Marsalis’ quartet in the Bimhuis for the masterful live recording Coltrane’s A Love Supreme: Live in Amsterdam. Calderazzo has further cemented his legacy as a soloist and trio leader, releasing albums such as Haiku, which showcases his lyrical brilliance, and Live, which features original compositions alongside interpretations of works by Keith Jarrett and Paul Motian.
