Description
Rotterdam Philharmonic marks Remembrance Week with once-banned repertoire
In a poignant tribute during the week of National Remembrance, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra presents a programme of works by Mendelssohn and Mozart—music that was banned during the Nazi occupation.
Mendelssohn’s overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream brings a sparkling, fairy-tale lightness, contrasted by the solemn power of his Symphony No. 5, the “Reformation”, a deeply moving piece that bridges Bach’s heritage with the Romantic grandeur of Bruckner, Wagner and Mahler.
Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 adds a lyrical centrepiece, while a world première by Dutch composer Metselaar completes the programme—a reflection on memory, identity and the enduring power of music in times of darkness and light.
